Antibody response to EBV in MSers is elevated

Epub: Lindsey et al. The antibody response to Epstein-Barr virions is altered in multiple sclerosis. J Neuroimmunol. 2012 Sep 28.

Infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with MS, and MSers have an increased antibody response to some EBV antigens. The major antigens of EBV are only partly defined. The hypothesis that was testes is that the antibody response to EBV is altered in MS. With ELISA, they found that antibodies to EB virions were increased in both serum and CSF of MSers. Western blots demonstrated that there are multiple different antigens recognized. The antibody response was generally higher in MS to all EBV antigens, with particularly significant increases for certain antigens. The investigator's conclude that the antibody response to EBV in MS is generally increased with altered specificity.

EBV

"This is a study that larger confirms what is known in the literature that MSers have a problem dealing with EBV and that there is an abeerrant immune response to the virus. Is this cause or effect; i.e. does EBV cause MS or does MS cause the aberrant antibody response? We don't know, but the other work on MS suggests that EBV infection is a prerequisite to develop the disease. This is why we are targeting EBV as the most likely virus to cause MS as part  of treatment trials we are planning under the Charcot Project."
